What is the difference between the Day of Christ and the Day of the Lord?

Scripture speaks of two related but distinct realities. The Day of the Lord is the specific period when God directly and decisively judges and punishes those who have rejected His word and His Christ. It is described again and again by the prophets as a day of wrath, trouble, distress, darkness, and desolation, when the Lord shows His supreme authority over all creation and brings vengeance on the wicked. It culminates in the Lord's return to make war against the antichrist and his kingdom and to establish His rule on the earth.

The Day of Christ, by contrast, is a title used specifically by the Apostle Paul, and it refers to the coming of Christ for His Church rather than to the judgment itself. Passages such as Philippians 1:6, Philippians 1:10, Philippians 2:16, and 1 Corinthians 1:8 speak of believers being kept blameless and rejoicing until the day of Christ, framing it as a day of hope and confidence for those in Him rather than a day of wrath.

This distinction matters because when Christ returns, He first appears in the sky, and the Church is caught up to meet Him in the air, as described in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17. Only after this does the Day of the Lord truly begin in its fullest sense, the outpouring of wrath, culminating in Christ coming to the earth on the white horse to take possession of it and establish His Kingdom. So the Day of Christ centers on the Church's relationship to Christ's coming, while the Day of the Lord centers on God's judgment upon the nations and the wicked.

It should be noted that the seven trumpet judgments are understood to occur before the Day of the Lord in its final sense of wrath, meaning the Church is present for the signs described before that day arrives, even though the saints are not appointed to the wrath and vengeance that belongs to the Day of the Lord itself.
