What are the books that are opened at the judgment?
At the judgment of the wicked dead, the books recording each person's deeds are opened, along with a separate book called the book of life, and each person is judged according to what is written in these books.
Scripture shows that when the wicked dead are raised and stand before God, more than one book is opened. Revelation 20:12 says, "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works." So there are the books that record each person's works, and then there is the book of life, which is distinct from the others.
The sea, death, and hell all give up their dead so that everyone can be judged according to what is written in these books. Revelation 20:13-14 explains, "And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death."
The final outcome of this judgment rests on whether a person's name is found in the book of life. Revelation 20:15 states plainly, "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." So the books opened at this judgment are the record of each person's works and the book of life, and together they determine each person's eternal destiny.
