What is the winepress of the wrath of God?

When Revelation speaks of Christ treading the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God, it is describing how the Lord Jesus, riding forth on a white horse as Faithful and True, will destroy the armies gathered against Him at Armageddon. Revelation 19:15 says of Him, "out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God." His weapon is not carnal, it is the sword of His own spoken Word, and that alone is enough to accomplish this judgment.

Revelation 14:19-20 shows this winepress imagery worked out in full: "the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God... the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs." Just as a treader crushes grapes underfoot until the juice flows, so the Lord Jesus will crush His enemies until their blood flows like the wine of that press, rising to the height of a horse's bridle and covering a great distance.

Joel 3:13 gives the same picture from the prophets, calling for the harvest to be reaped because it is ripe: "the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great." This ties the winepress directly to the wickedness of those being judged, showing that the fullness of their sin has ripened them for this judgment, just as grapes ripen for the press.

So the winepress of the wrath of God is not a place but an act of judgment, the crushing defeat of the Antichrist's armies and all who have rejected God, carried out by the Word of Christ Himself at the Battle of Armageddon, resulting in a slaughter so complete that it is pictured as blood flowing like wine from a trampled press.
